A Place to Call Home

I can’t believe I’m even getting to type this, but we bought a house! It feels like this process took forever, but in reality it has only been 8 weeks since we first looked at this house! We have only owned it for one full week, but we’re already loving it so much!! It is truly exactly what we were looking for. It is amazing how God provides for His children, and we are so incredibly thankful! I cannot wait until October when we’ll be husband and wife, and I’ll get to move in too!

Chris and I had talked pretty extensively about whether or not we wanted to rent or buy. Actually, it wasn’t really a case of what we wanted to do, but what we could do ;) We definitely wanted to buy, but we also knew that it might not be a possibility! Renting in this area is absolutely insane… it was hard to justify renting when our mortgage could be a few hundred dollars cheaper! Obviously, there are many expenses that come with home ownership, but at least it’s our own home and we can do whatever we want with it.

We had been looking at homes for several months, but none of them were even slightly decent. That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much!! One of the biggest things we needed in a house, was a garage or workshop that Chris could use for his projects. I think he would go crazy without it! That was another reason that renting seemed like a bad fit for us – we couldn’t find anywhere that had any sort of work area!

One night over FaceTime, during our daily discussion of all the ‘new listing!’ notifications we had received, Chris sent me a Zillow link to a cute-on-the-outside, situated on 2-acres, little white farmhouse. He said “this is the house I want the most out of any we’ve seen!”. His excitement was contagious, but I had my reservations. Mostly because in the pictures, the inside was not my dream home ;) I told him “it’s either going to be really good, or really bad”, hahaha.

Our realtor met us at the house a few days later, and when we opened the front door, I was honestly shocked! My expectations were pretty low to begin with, but it looked so nice! Sure, it wasn’t a Joanna Gaines house, but it had so much potential, and it wasn’t run down like it appeared in the pictures! We toured the house and I fell more in love with it as we walked room to room. We had 2 other houses to look at that day, but none of them compared at all. We put an offer in that evening!

Honestly, we had some struggles along the way. We ended up switching lenders two weeks before the closing date, and that whole ordeal was a mess… not going to get into it hahaha. But every hurdle we encountered, I felt a sense of peace that it was either all going to work out and we’d get the house, or it wasn’t God’s plan for us and we’d figure out something different! That’s not to say that I didn’t ever feel stressed, because I definitely did. But I tried very hard to not let it control me! The day that we closed and we got the keys to the house, it was so weird to know that it was all over! We are home owners!!

I also just have to say, that I am so proud of myself. Chris was at work for the majority of this process, and I was more than happy to be the contact person and get house things done for him! It was truly a blessing for me to feel like I was able to serve him in that way. But I took care of getting our home insurance policy written up, making sure things were getting scheduled on time, setting up meetings, and so much more. There is a RIDICULOUS amount of stuff involved in buying a house!! I had lots of help from mom and dad and Chris, but the fact that I got a majority of this done by myself gave me a huge sense of accomplishment.

I am SO excited to call this house ours, and improve it over the years! It is not lost on us that we’ve been given a huge blessing, and we’re thrilled to start working on these projects we’ve been dreaming about for the last few months. We see bringing our children into this home, watching them climb trees outside, hosting Sunday lunch for family, and so much more.

So now for some details about our house… It was originally built in 1899 – yes, 1899. But there was a big addition put on in 2006! So all the plumbing, electrical, and appliances have been updated. There are 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, and a small office for me! There is a BIG red barn that has heat and electricity and it’s perfect for Chris! I am so thrilled that he has that space. Not only can he build things to his hearts content, he can build me lots of things too ;) Our home sits on 2 acres of land, and it is the best location we could have asked for!! It is only 15 minutes from my house now (which really has come in handy with all the driving back and forth I’ve done lately!), and it is truly out in the country. We have cows for neighbors, and we are surrounded by trees. But we’re also only 4 miles from the interstate! Does it get any better than that??

I’m excited to share the projects we’re working on, but we’re going to need the before pictures, right?? ;) Here’s a peak of our home, and be looking for lots more to come!

The siding looks cleaner than it is, I need to take a power washer and bleach to it soon!

We have dreams of fruit trees up on the hill!

Someday I want to level this space out, and make a cute little patio with lights overhead!

Our house has 3 porches, and this one definitely needs some cleaning! Good thing cleaning is one of my favorite things to do ;)

I love how open the living area is!

I love my hard-working fiance!! The first thing we did in the new house was put new knobs and locks on all the doors, and he had to drill holes for the deadbolts. He works so tirelessly all the time! I couldn’t have picked anyone better.

Eventually these green countertops and brown cabinets will be replaced!

I can picture us starting our married life here, and I can’t WAIT!!

Someday we’ll knock out the wall by the laundry room and have a side-by-side washer and dryer in a mudroom area!

This big room is the master bedroom! It’s even bigger than it looks!

And GUYS… this CLOSET!! It is 11 feet long, and I cannot believe that it’s mine – uh, I mean, ours ;)

This is the start of the 1899 part of the house! The dining room needs the most work of all the rooms, and I’m excited to see it transform!

Hooray for new adventures!! :)

Congratulations! If you decide to get rid of the mantle in the REALLY PINK room I’d love to take it off your hands.
